For years, home service companies have fought to get to the top of Google. HVAC, plumbing, and electrical contractors have invested in websites, SEO, Google Business Profiles, reviews, and paid ads to make sure they show up when a homeowner needs help.
Those things still matter, but the way customers search is changing.
Instead of searching “AC repair near me” and scrolling through a list of companies, a homeowner can now ask an AI tool, “Who is a reputable HVAC company near me that offers financing?” or “Who is the best plumber in my area for an emergency water heater replacement?”
That creates a new question for contractors: When AI is asked who to recommend, does your company give it enough reasons to mention you?
Make It Easy to Understand Your Business
AI-powered search relies on the information available about your company online. That includes your website, reviews, business listings, service information, educational content, and other places your company is mentioned.
Take a look at your online presence from a homeowner’s perspective. Is it clear what you do, where you work, and why customers choose you? Are your hours and contact information accurate? Does your website answer common questions? Do your reviews consistently reflect the experience you want to be known for?
If your online presence only says some version of “We provide great service. Call us today,” there isn’t much substance behind the claim.
The goal isn’t to create content just for AI. It’s to make your business easier for anyone to understand and trust.
Answer the Questions You’re Already Hearing
You probably already have most of the content ideas you need.
Listen to the questions your CSRs answer every day, the concerns technicians hear at the kitchen table, and the objections your sales team works through before a homeowner moves forward.
An HVAC company can explain why one room never gets comfortable. A plumber can cover the warning signs of a failing water heater. An electrician can explain when it may be time for a panel upgrade.
These aren’t random marketing topics. They’re real questions from real customers, and answering them clearly helps establish your company as a useful resource before someone ever picks up the phone.
Being Found Is Only the Beginning
There is another side of this conversation that contractors can’t overlook.
You can have the best website in your market, dominate Google, and appear in AI-generated recommendations. Eventually, somebody still has to answer the phone, show up at the house, explain the options, perform the work, and follow up.
Your marketing makes the promise. Your team has to deliver it.
If your website talks about five-star service but the customer gets a rushed phone call, a late technician, or confusing options, better search visibility isn’t going to fix the problem.
Visibility gets you considered. Execution gives people a reason to recommend you again.
Don’t Chase AI. Build a Business Worth Recommending.
AI search may change how homeowners discover contractors, but you don’t need to rebuild your entire marketing strategy every time technology changes.
Start with the fundamentals. Keep your business information accurate. Clearly explain your services. Answer real customer questions. Build a strong reputation and consistently ask happy customers for reviews. Most importantly, train your team to deliver the experience you’re promising online.
Whether a customer finds you through Google, AI, social media, or a neighbor, the goal is the same: become the company people trust enough to recommend.
Technology may change how that recommendation happens.
The work required to earn it hasn’t.
