Experience or Not?
Earlier this week on April Fools’ Day I celebrated my 20 year anniversary as the owner of my plumbing heating, and air conditioning company. This is still a bit hard for me to believe because in some ways it seems like just yesterday that I was on my own, by myself in the truck running every single service call that came in. I’ve also never done anything longer than three years with the exception of serving in the United States Army. I stayed there three years because I had to and that was my contract.
Now I look at the past twenty years and think about all the mistakes, all the challenges, all the great lessons and experience that I’ve received. I’m very grateful for the experiences that have continued to help me grow as a leader and achiever.
The interesting thing to me is that I don’t even have 20 years of
experience. You might be saying, “Well Kenny you just stated you
had a 20 year anniversary.” Yes, I’ve been in business 20
years but I probably have around 15 years of real experience because I
was asleep at the wheel for at least 5 of those years.
Currently I’m working very hard with our mastermind group of contractors that we coach weekly on the point of focus; laser focus. Most of us run our businesses and our lives as what Dan Kennedy calls a wandering generality. Don’t let this be you any longer.
What are your goals? What are your dreams? What if you could grow your company 10X the size it currently is while improving your freedom at the same time? Guess what? You can. It’s a simple choice. Every day we walk through the doors of our offices we make choices about what our company will look like. All too often these choices are unconscious and they lead to another year of no new experience, but rather another 365 days passing us by on the calendar.
A quick Google search of the definition of experience says it’s “practical contact with and observation of facts or events.” If you’ve been following me for any time at all, you know that I’m all about simplicity and keeping our businesses, systems and lives as simple as possible. I don’t think we need a complicated definition, I believe you FEEL experience. The challenge I see contractors face is not learning from challenging experiences.
My friend Dan Sullivan, the founder of The Strategic Coach program, says one thing he hates is experience without learning. I love that because it keeps it simple and helps us realize we need to learn from our experiences whether they are defined as good or bad.
Twenty years ago I started with a vision. That vision has shifted and changed over the years, but the overall life vision I have for my company, my leaders and my family has not altered one bit. It’s about growth. It’s about contribution. It’s about love and fun.
If you’re feeling like you’re stuck and have a desire to “get to the next level” you’re simply missing a little part of the recipe. If I know you at all, I know that you probably can’t work any more hours or work harder at what you do. Is that true? I bet it is and all you need to do is shift how you think about things.
At The Blue Collar Success Group, we are dedicated to helping you multiply your success and we’ve been helping some of our clients double in sales every year we coach them. If you’d like to get more help, reply to this email and I’ll give you a gift of my time by having a 20 minute strategy session with you. Just you and I, one on one!
Make sure you don’t let another year go by with having experience but not learning. There is a better way and we have figured out the recipe.
