Check-In With Your Team

As a lifelong Seahawks fan I witnessed something 4 years ago when a friend and I had the pleasure of going down onto the field before a Seahawks game. As we were watching the teams warm up before a big game with the 49ers (the Seahawks won!) we noticed the team’s new Coach at the time Pete Carroll. He took the time to check-in with every player, coach, assistant, and anybody else involved with the team. As we watched him engage with each individual on the team you could see there was something special in his approach and it was proven this year with the Seahawks first ever world championship.
As owners and managers we are always looking at ways to improve our companies and make our team better.
That day on the Seahawks field has resonated with me for the last 4 years. Recently it was brought back to the front of my mind when I checked-in with each member on our team. We went over the good and bad from last year as well as personal and professional goals for this year. We talked about family and what was happening away from work as well as what they enjoyed and got out of their job.
When I asked each team member what the company or I as the owner could do to help them achieve their goals one common answer kept coming up, “check-in with me more often.”
Like what I witnessed on the Seahawks field that day, checking in with your team is a little thing that we as owners and managers take for granted or don’t feel we can or should ask about our team members personal lives and goals. But this is a huge part of team building. Showing we care about people as an individual as well as an employee can lead to a world championship team. GO HAWKS!!!
