A Pride Swallowing Affair
In one of my previous articles I compared business partners to a marriage. I did this to highlight the importance of things like trust, loyalty, character, and communication which are the keys to a great relationship. Now whether we are talking about a major relationship such as a business partner or whether we’re talking about a less “committal” relationship with lets say, a supplier, one thing remains constant...the job needs to get done. In other words, at the end of they day, that worker needs to show up to work, that architect needs to get you those drawings, and you need your secretary to finish those reports. That is essentially “the ends.” Unfortunately, “the means,” is often a pride swallowing affair.
I say this because as business men and women we are often faced with people and situations that truly get our blood boiling. A particular person continues to disregard your instructions. Someone is consistently late. This is the second time you received the wrong order. No matter what it is, we’re ready to fly off the handle, and we often do. It is only after giving the butt chewing of the century that you realize you have just made the situation worse for yourself. Although you received the immediate satisfaction of chewing someone’s head off; you were probably better off just swallowing some pride.
Now this is not to say that you should accept ineptitude in the long term. If someone is consistently underperforming then certainly changes need to be made BEFORE another job begins. And even then, it might pay for you to dismiss them nicely. However, if you’re in the midst of a job and this person can make your life even worse if you get on their bad side; take a deep breath and get your stomach ready. The truth of the matter is that if you need something from someone, then they have the power to deny it to you. So be cautious.
For some reason pride always costs. There has never been a time in my life that being prideful has made me money. Lack of emotional control is one of the quickest ways to sour a project, a deal, or a relationship. Remember, whoever has control over their emotions controls the deal because clear decisions are a product of logical thinking. Unfortunately as an entrepreneur you will be faced with situations like this for your entire career. That’s why not many people can do what you do. Hope you’re hungry:)
